Award-winning young fundraiser to switch on Camborne Christmas lights

Twelve-year-old Mia Richardson’s impressive achievements include raising nearly £30,000 for Cornwall Care’s Blackwood House in Camborne by cycling the distance between Land’s End and John O’Groats on her family’s cross-trainer and scooping the Unpaid Carer’s Award at the regional finals of the Great British Care Awards.

Now, in recognition of all that she does for her local community, the Camborne school girl and Cornwall Care Young Ambassador will be switching on the town’s Christmas lights.

“Mia is amazing and this is our way of thanking her for everything she’s been doing to make life as good as it can be for Blackwood’s vulnerable residents,” said BID manager Anna Pascoe. “She began her marathon cycling session during lockdown with the aim of raising enough money to buy an interactive magic table for the home.

“She has now succeeded in buying two – together with a greenhouse, handmade furniture for the garden and hairdressing equipment. A new summerhouse is also planned for 2022. My nan lived at Blackwood House during her twilight years, so I have first-hand experience of how very caring and dedicated staff there are.

“Mia is an exceptional young lady and we’re honoured that she’ll be officially launching this year’s Christmas in Camborne.”

BID Camborne organises and funds the annual festivities in partnership with Camborne Town Council and Camborne Parish Church.

“Mia was really excited to be asked,” said her father, Dan Richardson. “She loves visiting the home where my wife Bernie works and we honestly couldn’t be prouder of the difference our daughter makes.”

The Christmas lights switch-on event will take place on Friday 26 November in Camborne’s town square. Entertainment will start at 3pm, with a programme of activities hosted by Cornish comedian Anna Keirle, culminating with the TR14ers dance group at 5.15pm. The children’s lantern parade will proceed round town from 5.45pm, with the lights switch on at 6.30pm.
