Best in Cornwall award for Penberthy

Cornwall Care’s outstanding staff at Penberthy in Newquay have been recognised with the CAHSC Care Home Team of the Year Award at a gala evening held at Tregenna Castle Hotel in St Ives.

The team were shortlisted as finalists in the prestigious Care and Support Awards 2022 after organising a surprise reunion for Jean and David Hill – a devoted local couple who have been married for 66 years.

When Jean needed looking after, David became her main carer. When he developed dementia, he needed care himself and a move to Penberthy followed.

Desperate to be with her husband, Jean asked if she could join her husband there. Plans were put in place and a very emotional reunion followed.

“Jean moved in but had to remain in isolation for a while because of Covid precautions,” said Penberthy manager Sue Aldridge. “We didn’t want to tell David what was happening until she could be with him properly, so it was a real surprise when he walked into his room and found his wife sitting there.

“The whole Penberthy team worked hard to organise it all and I can honestly say there wasn’t a dry eye in the house when everything came together and the couple were reunited.

“Nothing is too much trouble for the staff here. They really do care and will always go the extra mile.”

CAHSC is a Falmouth-based charity that aims to develop the adult health and social care workforce in Cornwall and Devon.

“I am so proud of Sue Aldridge and her team,” said Cornwall Care CEO Anne Thomas. “They represent what excellence in adult social care means and I congratulate them wholeheartedly on this well-deserved recognition.

“The enormous challenges of the last two years make moments like Jean and David’s Penberthy reunion even more wonderful. Our carers care – in every sense of the word.”
