Redannick and Mountford residents take to the ice

Proving you’re never too old to experience something new, 99-year-old Gladys Brown has tried ice-skating for the very first time – and loved it.

Gladys, who will be 100 this month, was one of eleven residents from Redannick and Mountford care homes in Truro who travelled to The Eden Project for 40 minutes of skating around in wheelchairs, accompanied by carers, friends and relatives.

To add to the merriment and sense of occasion, some of those accompanying the group were dressed up in Halloween costumes.

“We all had an amazing time and I can’t thank the Eden team enough for their generosity and helpfulness,” said Cornwall Care administrator Angie Bray, who organised the outing. “Our kitchen had sent us off with sausage rolls and we bought hot drinks on site. One of our residents, Herbert Thorp who is 91, only wanted ice-cream though! He was with his daughter Eve and her partner Angela and we obviously all made sure his wish came true.”

After their exclusive time on the ice-rink, the Cornwall Care visitors had a look round the rest of the Eden site – including its famous biomes.

“I can’t even begin to describe the fun everyone had,” said Angie. “It really was a day to remember and one we’re hoping to repeat with more of our homes next year.”

“We are all about improving lives by going the extra mile and this trip is a great example of that,” said Cornwall Care Chief Executive Anne Thomas. “I’m so pleased it all went well and congratulate Gladys for celebrating her centenary with some Eden ice-skating.”
