Trevarna’s art project gets off to a good start

Posted by admin on February 13,2020

Our residents at Trevarna enjoyed a really creative time last week.

Ruth Purdy, Creative Director at Make it Better (MITBER) CIC has been holding art workshops with Trevarna and some of our other homes. This is what she had to say about the last art session at Trevarna:

“I witnessed great camaraderie between residents, staff and volunteers, they all felt that having a session with me helped ‘upskill’ in the practicalities. We talked a lot about positive communication today, taking direction from participants, or offering choices. We also talked about making connections and the meaningful relationships in the lives of participants.”

We asked for comments from staff and volunteers and here is a snapshot of what they had to say:

‘We learnt how to get the best communication from individuals'

‘We got pleasure from seeing others enjoy being involved in these activities’

‘We saw changes in ‘increased responsiveness’

'Changes were also seen in communication, mood, activity and engagement overall.'

There are numerous published studies which have found that the cathartic and interactive nature of art therapy offers many benefits, both physical and psychological, including promoting self-awareness, facilitating intellectual stimulation, improving cognitive skills and coordination and reducing anxiety and stress.
