Will you ‘Reach for the Moon’?

Will you ‘Reach for the Moon’?

To mark its 25th anniversary year, Cornwall Care is challenging people of all ages to take part in a major fundraising campaign and ‘Reach for the Moon’.

There are 384,400 kilometres separating earth from its nearest neighbouring planet. The charity is asking people to contribute to the distance virtually – either physically or by setting themselves a healthy goal that, through the activity or amount of donations received, can be converted into kilometres covered.

As an example, someone giving up smoking or drinking for a day, could claim 10km and pursuits like knitting, sewing, making art or crafting are all equally acceptable.

Head of Fundraising for Cornwall Care Jan Burns has enlisted the support of her family in an impressive joint venture.

“My husband, daughter and I have decided to cumulatively walk, cycle and run from St Erth in Cornwall to Moon, Pennsylvania,” she said. “That’s a distance of 5687km for each of us – or 5.2km per day throughout the year.

“We are, of course, abiding by lockdown restrictions and doing what we can as part of our daily exercise. It’s good to know we are keeping fit, whilst also raising money for an excellent cause.”

Cornwall Care was established as an independent charity in 1996 after Cornwall Council decided its 16 homes should no longer be run in-house. The organisation currently employs 1500 staff and looks after more than 1000 elderly and vulnerable people residentially and in the community.

“It has been an extremely difficult year for everyone working in the care sector but 2021 is significant for Cornwall Care and, with immunisation against COVID now a reality, we’re planning for a much brighter future,” said CEO Anne Thomas.

“Encouraging people to reach for the moon seems appropriate at a time when most of us want to look forwards with hope and all the money donated will go towards making life better for those in our care.”

“Please help us continue making a difference by doing your bit for a cause that will help bring a smile to so many. It doesn’t matter how much or little you’re able to do, it’s the taking part that counts.”
